Short Course

16th December 2023

Thematic short courses have been provided since the first “Encontro Nacional de Cromatografia” (ENC) and the 13th meeting will continue this long-standing tradition.

This year the short course will focus on the exploration of drug metabolites of a new emerging drug of abuse in biological samples, analysed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). A summary is presented below.

Registration is mandatory.Please make your registration at your personal area ("booking" menu). If you require further assistance, please contact Andreia Bento da Silva (abentosilva@ff.ulisboa.pt).

All participants will receive a certificate of participation that will include information about the program and number of hours of the short course.

EXPLORING DRUG METABOLISM: THE ROLE OF LC-MS/MS ANALYSIS

  • Andreia Bento da Silva – Faculdade de Farmácia, Universidade de Lisboa

  • Cristina Almeida – Faculdade de Farmácia, Universidade de Lisboa

  • Noélia Duarte – Faculdade de Farmácia, Universidade de Lisboa

  • Paula Marques – Faculdade de Farmácia, Universidade de Lisboa

Brief summary

The course will explore the potentialities of UHPLC-MS/MS to gain a better understanding of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicology (ADMET). Participants will work on a case-study aiming to identify the metabolites of a new illicit drug, envisioning the detection of drug consumption in routine drug screening. The course will provide an overview of UHPLC-MS/MS (triple quadrupole) analysis and describe several applications. The participants will have the opportunity to explore the equipment and data treatment in a dedicated software. Several research steps needed to identify drugs and their metabolites will be described:

(1) Optimization of the conditions for the detection of the parent drug and synthetized metabolites;

(2) Searching for additional predicted metabolites in biological samples;

(3) Quantitation of the drug and main metabolites in biological samples.
